Youth in Government

The Youth in Government (YIG) activities with Parkview sixth grade students and the Borough of Westville are happening this Month!

Youth in Government is a national program that involves thousands of teens nationwide in state-organized model-government programs. Students from every corner of the U.S. have the opportunity to learn about government and are provided with the opportunity to practice democracy.

The Lions Club of Westville started participating in the YIG program in 1944 and since then, local support has grown to include Borough Council as well as the Police, Fire and Public Works Departments.

Last Monday elected students visited Borough Hall to learn the different aspects of managing local government from collecting Taxes and Water and Sewer utility fees to how the Borough Administrator and his staff manage the day-to-day operations of municipal government. They were also taken on a tour of the Public Works facilities by Superintendent Finger and Police Officers O'Connell and Beaucicault escorted the students on a tour of the Police Department.

On Monday, May 20th, elected students will run the May council meeting, along with our Governing Body, and they will have the opportunity to vote on real issues with the support of their designed elected official. Throughout the next two weeks, the students will visit the Fire Department and Lions Club to learn about their operations.

It’s an exciting time for Borough officials and students and we look forward to working with the Youth of Westville to show them municipal government in action.
