Water Update

Water Update

On December 21, 2023, Westville’s quarterly water testing showed a decrease in parts per trillion of PFNA’s.  The result of the testing showed a reading of 4 parts per trillion, a decrease from the last sample taken in September 2023 which was 13.0 parts per trillion. The well that tested 13.0 parts per trillion was shut down in October 2023 and Public Works switched water operations to another well where the readings of PFNA’s recently tested at 4.0 parts per trillion which is under the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) limit of 13.0.

Under NJDEP mandates, switching wells is considered a temporary measure so the Borough will continue to move forward with a permanent solution that includes the installation of two new GAC (granular activated carbon) filters.  However, because the NJDEP considers switching wells a temporary measure, the Borough is still required to send out a violation letter every 90 days until a permanent treatment is installed, even though the Borough’s current running average is below the threshold of 13.0.

Be assured the Water treatment issue is a priority with the Governing Body and the Water Department and progress is being made on addressing the issue.  To date, the Borough Engineer has been authorized, by Council, to submit the required permitting paperwork to the NJDEP to begin the process of designing and expanding the Westville Filtration Water Plant.  The expansion will include the installation of a new filtration system with GAC filters which will take PFNA’s to an undetectable level once the system is online.

Upgrading our Water Filtration system will be an expensive process so I would like Westville water users to know that the Governing Body has applied for grants and has met and will continue to meet with State and Federal officials for funding of this project.

I will continue to post updates to Facebook and our web site but if you have any questions about the Water, please feel free to contact our Public Works Manager Marty Finger at 856-456-7785.
